![]() I used a 20” $12.99 box fan from Ace Hardware to build my bean cooler. The fan is held horizontal in a frame, a screened box section fits over top. The fan holder box is built from 1 x 4’s, to fit snugly around the fan and handle. Pieces of 2 X 2’s are attached inside the frame, flush with the bottom to support the fan. The top section is a 1x 4 box built to fit snugly around the top part of the fan protruding from the lower box. I then put a 1 x 1 support across the middle of the box flush with the top for a screen support. Next I attached a piece of aluminum screening, stapled to the top section and middle support. Trimmed off any screening hanging over the edge. Next I built a identical size box with 1 x 3’s and put a bead of Liquid Nails over the screening on the edges of the screen box, drilled some holes down through the 3” side of the top part and used some long thin screws to attach it to the lower section, sandwiching the screen between the two sections. I later sealed the inside edges of the screen box with high temperature silicone to keep any beans from working under the screen and frame. ![]() ![]() ![]() The fan is set to medium speed, dump the hot beans in, unplug the rotisserie motor from the extension cord and plug in the fan and the chaff starts to blow all over, the beans are stirred by hand (glove covered at first)for 2 or 3 minutes and they are completely cool and chaff-less. Initially the air coming up from the fan is quite hot, do not have your head over the beans when you turn the fan on, and start stirring. The fan has plastic blades, but the screen section is above the plastic parts of the fan and the heat from the beans has had no effect on the fan grill or blades. | Return Home | Popcorn Popper Roasting | Building a Gas Grill Roaster | Bean Cooler | Gas Grill Roasting | Growing a Coffee Tree | Links | Contact | |
