![]() Home Roasting History I have been roasting coffee in popcorn poppers for about 10 years and have been totally spoiled by the experience of truly fresh roasted high quality coffee. This experience has spoiled me to the point that even restaurant coffee tastes like dish water. One of the best kept secrets in the US is what coffee can taste like, most people know nothing more about coffee than the stale canned coffee they buy in the supermarket that gives them their jolt of caffeine to start the day. Most of the brewed coffee I have had at local coffee shops has been unimpressive, there seems to be an indifference to the quality of coffee. I became bored and frustrated roasting small batches in the hot air poppers. If I need a couple of pounds to give or sell to a friend I became a slave to the hot air popper. The commercial home roasting units don’t offer much more in the way of capacity. Eight or nine ounces in 20 minutes seem to be the limit. From that point on a coffee roaster has to use an energy source more powerful than household current. A 1/2 kilo propane unit costs around $3500. and the next level up one is looking at $5000.-$10,000. dollars for a drum roaster. Ouch! Having read many of the home roasting pages on the web I decided to try to build a gas grill roaster myself. I am of average mechanical ability, and have limited household tools. I posted these pages to share my experiences home roasting coffee, and building a gas grill roaster. If anyone cares to undertake such an endeavor, I strongly recommend they follow all safety guidelines as one can be seriously injured by the propane used in any gas grill. Note: If you make any modifications to equipment, you do so at your own risk. There is commercially manufactured coffee roasting equipment available from many sources, including the companies listed on the Links page. This web site does not imply or endorse that any modifications you may make to equipment is safe or that they will work. | Return Home | Popcorn Popper Roasting | Building a Gas Grill Roaster | Bean Cooler | Gas Grill Roasting | Growing a Coffee Tree | Links | Contact | |
